What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (also called male impotence) is the inability to achieve enough erection to penetrate the partner and perform a satisfactory intercourse. In some cases erection does not develop at all, sometimes erection is achieved but the penis is not hard enough to enter the partner or erection is lost soon after penetration. This happens because of insufficient blood influx in penis.
Note that absence of sexual desire and erectile dysfunction are different things.
ED can occur at different ages (even in teenagers) for a large number of reasons, most linked to either physiological problems or diseases. However, the causes vary depening on the age.
- In young men or teenagers ED occurs mostly because of anxiety about causing a pregnancy, diffidence and nervousness or even because of using a condom.
- In middle age men ED occurs because of stress, problems at work or overworking, guilt or loss or a loved one.
- In mature and aged men ED occurs commonly because of cardiovascular problems and deterioration in the blood vessels. That is why aged man with ED, it addition to erectile dysfunction treatment, should take care of their health in general to prevent heart attacks and strokes by decreasing cholesterol levels and keeping blood pressure down.
